There’s something special about watching a group of young children become completely absorbed in a story.

Our children at Early Foundation Childcare Craigieburn recently enjoyed a wonderful storytelling incursion with a storyteller from Craigieburn Library, bringing books, imagination and plenty of curious little listeners into our learning environment.

Building a Love of Books and Storytelling

Throughout the session, the children listened, responded and became involved in the stories being shared.

Storytelling experiences like this provide children with opportunities to develop their listening, communication and early literacy skills, while also encouraging imagination, creativity and a lifelong love of books.

For our younger children, simply listening to expressive language, sounds and repetition supports their growing understanding of words and communication. For our older children, stories encourage conversation, questions, predictions and opportunities to share their own ideas.

Most importantly, it was fun. The children were engaged, curious and excited to see where each story would take them next.

Connecting Children With Their Local Community

At EFC, we believe some of the most meaningful learning happens when children are able to connect with the wider community around them.

Welcoming Craigieburn Library into our centre introduced children to an important local community resource and helped create positive early experiences with books, libraries and reading.

These connections also help children understand that learning doesn’t only happen inside their classroom — there are people, places and experiences throughout their community that can help them discover something new.

More Than the Everyday Routine

Incursions, excursions and special visitors form part of the wider learning experiences we provide at Early Foundation Childcare Craigieburn.

Whether it’s storytelling, community visitors, cultural celebrations or hands-on learning experiences, we want our children to have opportunities to explore different interests, build confidence and engage with the world around them.
